AymurAI: Innovating with AI to Foster Open Justice and Combat Gender-Based Violence, a Collaboration between DataGénero and Collective AI

Introduction

DataGénero is a gender-focused data observatory dedicated to monitoring the various data practices that directly affect the lives of women and LGBTI+ individuals in Latin America. Their mission involves providing expert guidance to individuals, governments, and organizations that utilize and depend on data. DataGénero offers a range of services, including audits, training, workshops, and customized intervention projects, all designed to meet the unique needs of each context they serve.

Many of their projects are aimed at collecting, analyzing, and publishing data with a gender and diversity perspective. Among other valuable contributions to this field, they have driven the development of artificial intelligence tools that streamline the processing of the data they work with.

AymurAI

AymurAI, which evokes the Quechua word for 'harvest', is a notable example of these projects. This open-source AI-based software is designed to collect and publish data on gender-based violence from judicial rulings. AymurAI anonymizes documents and automates the extraction of statistical data, facilitating the 'harvest' of vital information to improve judicial transparency.

The AI systems used in AymurAI were developed by Collective AI. These systems combine advanced natural language processing techniques, such as Named Entity Recognition, which identifies and anonymizes sensitive information in judicial rulings. Additionally, semantic information retrieval techniques are used to classify specific details, such as the type of violence, the relationship with the aggressor, and other relevant data.

Use Cases

AymurAI is currently being implemented in the 10th Criminal Court of the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina. This Criminal Court, led by Pablo Casas, promotes, designs, and enables the application of open justice policies through its public database. The use of AymurAI not only facilitates the maintenance of this database, which contains more than five thousand anonymized judicial rulings dated from August 2016, but also contributes to a more transparent and accessible judicial system, directly impacting the fight against gender-based violence.

Recognition by UNESCO

The AymurAI project was recognized by UNESCO with its inclusion in the Global Toolkit on AI and the Rule of Law for the Judiciary. This document empowers judicial operators with the knowledge and tools to navigate the benefits, risks, and human rights implications of AI in accordance with international law and ethical standards.

This recognition underscores the global relevance and impact of AymurAI in promoting open gender-sensitive justice. By being part of this important Toolkit, AymurAI is positioned alongside other pioneering initiatives that are shaping the future of AI in the judiciary. It highlights the importance of leveraging technology to uphold human rights and ensure that AI systems are used ethically and transparently in legal contexts.

At Collective AI, we believe in Data Science for social good. We value the potential of tools like AymurAI to enhance judicial transparency in Latin America and beyond. We invite civil society organizations, courts, and tribunals committed to improving transparency and justice in their communities to explore collaborations with us to continue promoting the development of AI-based technologies with a positive social impact.
